Smartest Dogs – A Great Top Ten List



Some say that the intelligence of a dog depends on how well it is trained, others believe it’s all about the breed. While it may very likely be a combination of both, here’s a look at the Top 10 smartest dogs by breed.

10 Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle dogs generally grow to be about 30-50lbs. They are well known for their intelligence, especially when it comes to being able to train them to herd in cattle. They have also been trained as ‘biting dogs’ – to bite cattle (not too hard) to keep them moving. These dogs have been herding cattle since the 19th century. Australian Cattle dogs are very active and love having a task at hand.

9 Rottweiler

Better known as the “Rottie,” Rottweilers can be mis-trained to be vicious. Rottweilers can weigh as much as a small sized female; about 110lbs.  Rottweilers are sometimes used as police dogs because of their strong teeth and jaws. In the olden days, they were used to carry wood and other large heavy goods. If you’re looking to train a dog to protect you and all of your belongings, a Rottie  the way to go.

8 Papillon

Papillons are able to show that small, cute dogs can be smart too. Papillons can weigh up to 11lbs and can weigh as little as 3lbs. These dogs are very charming and elegant. During the Renaissance, these dogs were adored by royal courts and the aristocrats of the time. They make for a good watch dogs because of their keen sense of hearing.

7 Labrador Retriever

The Labrador is one of the most intelligent and popular  dog breeds in the world. Coming from Newfoundland the Lab was originally trained to hunt waterfowl. As time went on Labs have been introduced to more and more jobs. Many Labs are used as bomb sniffing or drug sniffing dogs as well as being known for their search and rescue abilities. Many are trained to help the disabled, especially the blind because they can be trained to lead a human around while ignoring distractions. The Labrador Retriever is a loving, obedient, and patient dog that can easily be trained.

6 Shetland Sheepdog

Although not one of the most popular dogs, the Shetland Sheepdog is a very smart. Shelties originated out of Scotland and are used to herd sheep. Since the breed can be both big and small these dogs are sometimes used to keep smaller animals out of gardens. Shetland Sheepdog’s have a great sense of hearing. When someone arrives at your door you can expect to hear barking from this dog.

5 Doberman Pinscher

In the past, Dobermans were trained to be police dogs, watch dogs, and guard dogs. These dogs are loving and loyal and can be tough and ferocious if necessary. Many of these dogs are very gentle and docile and have even been used in hospitals to help patients undergoing therapy. A true protector.

4 Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are very popular family dogs. These dogs are great hunting companions as they are easily trained to find and bring back waterfowl or game that has been shot. Golden Retrievers are also used as rescue dogs, drug sniffing dogs, and guide dogs. This breed is very patient, which makes it easier to train.

3 German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is one of the most lovable breeds of dog you will ever come across. These dogs are usually trained to be police dogs and rescue dogs. Some are even trained to work in the military and are so smart that the Army and Marines have allowed them to be used overseas. The German Shepherd is one of the smartest dogs around, very obedient as well as protective.

2. Poodle

The Poodle is absolutely brilliant therefore earned a number 2 spot on this list. Not commonly known, Poodles are used as hunting dogs as well as watch and rescue dogs. Poodles come in all sizes, love to be around people and are very protective. They are also known to have a warm loving heart.

#1 Border Collie

Border Collie, number one on the list should come as no surprise. This dog lives to work as it needs something to do to be happy. The Border Collie is used as a herding dog and as a sporting dog as well. Known for its agility, speed, and obedience as well as it’s ability to learn new tricks quickly. Collies are especially great at dog sport competitions, competing in Flyball and disc games.
