HOW TO THROW AN AWESOME BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR YOUR DOG

How to host a dog birthday party
It’s your dog’s birthday and you want to do something special; you know your ‘non-doggy’ friends will think you’re mad, but who cares – it’s time to throw an awesome pawty for your pooch! Since your pup can’t plan their own party (unless they are highly intelligent and excellent with a glue gun), you will have to take charge – yay! Whether you are a puppy party planning newbie, or a seasoned pro, our roundup of tips from themes to invites and decorations will guarantee this is one cracking canine celebration.
Pssst – sign up to STYLETAILS and we’ll send a special treat on your dog’s birthday!

PARTY THEME

Dog birthday parties can seem a bit whacky, so pick a fun yet tasteful theme that can be enjoyable for dog and human guests alike. Lily from Hello Darling Blog shares how she created a stylish bohemian party for her puppy Kyra’s first birthday. The low level DIY table allows for dogs and humans to dine together (only for dogs with good table manners!), a lovely, yet little unconventional touch. The Big Dot of Happiness blog (image above) takes a more playful approach, using a leopard print theme with printable templates that you can print from their website. Once you’ve created your invites, choose a date and create your guest list.

INVITATIONS

Invitations set the tone for your party and allow you to get an idea of numbers. There are two ways of making your dog’s birthday party invites: downloading a template or making them from scratch yourself. Brittany and Sara of One Charming Party (image above) have created an adorable and visually stunning template to send out to your furry friends and their owners. Pair the invite with a simple envelope lined with a houndstooth print for an extra special touch. Alternatively, you can easily adapt a children’s invite template to suit the occasion. When sending out your invites be sure to let your guests know dogs are welcome, what fun is a dog party without any dogs?!

TREATS & FOOD

Make dog themed treats guests to serve when they get peckish. Youtube extraordinaire Zoe Sugg shares recipes from her puppy Nala’s first birthday bash on her blog Zoella: pug cookies for the human guests and cream cheese cupcakes for the dogs – but be sure to get these the right way round! Also make sure your canine guests are fully hydrated by dotting water bowls around the area, or even taking things up a notch with this awesome non-alcoholic dog beer!

DECORATIONS

We recommend hosting your party at home, not just for your own convenience but for the safety of the dogs too. Decorations can make or break your party and transform even the most basic of venues. Choose your decorations based on your theme and do as much or as little as time and resources allow. Kara’s Party Ideas have some gorgeous inspiration for the table settings, complete with dog bowls and party gift bags! One more item we’ve seen constantly cropping up is doggy themed party hats, such as these graphic puppy print ones from One Charming Party, they are sure to the faces of your human guests.

GAMES & ACTIVITIES

Make sure there’s plenty of stimulation for your canine guests with a bunch of dog toys and games to play. These Giant Pom Pom toys are really festive and loads of fun, or you could set up this muffin tin game (above), but it’s worth noting this would probably be best suited to smaller groups. For a hot summer’s day, why not set up a paddling pool for the dogs, and possibly the children to cool off in?
If you have the space and fancy the laughs, you could also try setting up a little agility course. There are tons of DIY tutorials for this online; we recommend checking out this guide fromCaeser’s Way. If you want to go even further, Petful splits up the course by price and equipment and you can create a course.

PARTY ATTIRE

No one wants to show up under-dressed to their own party, not even your dog. A funky bow tie will make sure your pooch looks the part; you could even source some fancy neckwear for your other canine guests. You can find a great selection of dog bow ties in a range of prints and patterns (including the jazzy number above) in the STYLETAILS SHOP.
